S2023 E1: A genre-defying salute with performances and artist tributes honoring Tanya Tucker and Patti Labelle, who smashed stereotypes, broke records, and trailblazed for future generations.
CMT Smashing Glass is first and foremost a celebration of women who smashed glass ceilings and defiantly blazed trails. A musical event that will honor artists who rewrote the narrative for women in music. CMT Smashing Glass 2023 will honor 2 prolific women: Patti LaBelle who redefined the possibilities of girl groups with Labelle and Tanya Tucker who infused rock and roll into country music and blazed a path for crossover artists. Each icon will have music tributes by artists that were inspired by them before the icon themselves take the stage in a once in a lifetime performance.
CMT Smashing Glass will also honor and pay respect to the late women of music who blazed trails in our Moment of Respect. From Ella Fitzgerald, whose stunning control over the band and announced the power of female voices to Patsy Cline, who brought country to the mainstream to Aretha Franklin who forever transformed the narrative for women in all genres with her musical demand for Respect. This piece will conclude with a musical memorial tribute to glass smashing artists who’ve passed this year, including the queen of rock and roll Tina Turner, who empowered the world with her story of survival and resilience, and Sinead O’Connor, the woman who smashed conventions of a pop star by using her life and music to illuminate the world’s burning issues. We celebrate the story of women who spent their lives demanding respect, and perhaps never got enough of it in their waking life. Women whose music will live on and empower all those that truly listen.
